Bendi! Apron!

July 15, 2005

This weekend I am going to bendigo for the sheep show! It is going to be freezing and possibly muddy so I've dragged my doc martens out of the cupboard and worn them to work today (to wear them back in) and I feel way cool.

I have some yarn to pick up from Amanda also, the brown sheep lambs pride bulky i bought for simply marilyn and the cotton fleece i bought for.. i bought for.. well i bought it anyway. Plus I've got all my handpainted stuff that just arrives, and just over $100 in the craft fund, so I will not be spending too much let me assure you!

However I do have plans to pick up a ball or two of jo sharp aran tweed, possibly some yarn for a reaaly nice pair of legwarmers, and some yarn for my first pair of socks.

I am going to give myself a budget for the day of $70 including food and yarn so we'll see how I go. In the car on the way I'll hopefully be able to knit (note to self, take your travel sickness tablets in the morn) - will take along bloom and the corkscrew scarf which I knit a wee bit more on last night.

Of late I have been reading and chilling a lot more than knitting on weekday evenings rather than knitting - which is ok though it has slowed my progress a bit. However I have read about a million books in the last few weeks and have been meaning to post what I've been reading! must get to that.

The most exciting thing to happen this weekend will be the first episode of season two of battlestar galactica! hooray! It has been a long wait.. It is one of my favourite shows.

That will be Saturday night.. Then Sunday I'm going to see Sin City in the morning, then grocery shopping, cooking, washing, the usual! And squeeze in a bit of knitting hopefully.

However I have wednesday and thursday off next week to get some serious organizing done so will also be engaging in a bit of (my favourite)... list making!

In other news.. there's been quite a lot of apron talk going on over the web, and I've only seen a couple that have really made me want to go and get an apron, but how is this for fabulous?? Some people's talents really know no bounds!

New Scarf + Beanie, w buttons, and stuff!

June 18, 2005

Today I read eleven hours which I bought during the week. It was pretty good and a quick read! Not good enough that I'm saying go out and buy it - but if it's sitting on a shelf somewhere accessible, I certainly encourage you... so didn't knit much today, just a few rows on bloom.

But in other knitting news, I got a great stripey scarf and beanie set, in beige and chocolate brown, a gift from M's sister D and fiancee A, who arrived from Sunny Perth today. They are a beautiful soft lambswool/angora etc blend, and have buttons on them (in keeping with my current knit and buttons obsession, yay) Tomorrow is D's birthday - regular blog readers will know what she's getting. There's been an emergency related to that gift, which I'll chronicle another time.. It will put the fear of god into you and make sure you ALWAYS prewash your fabrics..

Anyhoo, I also made some anzacs, and there's chinese food about to arrive. I'm getting all the things I love that I don't normally have like honey king prawns and prawn crackers, yum, along with staples like satay beef and chicken with cashews.

Tomorrow we're going to cook up some kind of birthday dinner, and I'm baking a cake, a packet cake with some mods so I may do some photos. I may also use my new chocolate making kit (which I've not yet blogged about but is definitely blog worthy, so hang in there) to do some white chocolate stripes over the icing - D is very good at this and can help me. I've got champagne chillin and frozen rasberries so we may need to choose between the champagne and my famous rasberry dacquiris as apertif! Oh, decisions..

I'm about to start my new mary moody book. I may cop a bit of flack for it, but I love her!

There's a few FO's floating around that are needing blogging.. Modified Airy Scarf, Tote Bag, Liquor Chocolates, at the very least, plus the dual saga of the sewing blocks and the red fabric from last week, so hopefully tomorrow I"ll get busy with it all!

Yay a long weekend!

June 10, 2005

Lots happening this weekend. Having a friend around for some crafting, and she's going to teach me to make liquer chocolates, yum. Going to sew a big tote to replace my green safeway bag I'm carting to work - once you count gym gear I can't find everything into anything smaller, but now I've a new teeny mobile phone I really need a bag with a pocket, so going to make one..

Oh and I want to check out the martha stewart kids magazine website. And I have a baby gift to start work on. And a new book to read, a referral from a bud at work. And I'm not going to cook much this weekend - I've cooked major bulk the last few weekends for freezing etc, and I need a break from that methinks. And possibly a movie, mr and mrs smith looks great.

I'd like to have a good look at my recently purchased skirt pattern and ponder to self If I'm serious about making on and doing a proper job not hodge podge like my other, doomed from start, attempts.

Hopefully finish handles on french market bag and felt the thing.

Work on bloom piece two a bit (Still not sure when I'll be able to get someone to fix piece one).

And probably surf blogs heaps as usual, and think of a million things I want, and watch lots of dvds, and sit around a lot, and take miss kitty to the vet, and go grocery shopping, and do the laundry etc etc. dye my hair black. seek out scotchguard spray at the supermarket. Check out my diary and see what's coming up that I should be planning for.. Get started on my patchwork cushion from my new quilting book, or at least pic fabrics and start cutting..

What else methinks??? A bath, everyday, of course, and hopefully a wine or two, as I've been refraining cos of this cold.. I could really use a face mask and exfoliation, and possibly a bit of epilation too. And If I could remember to stretch, and drink plenty of water... And look at the budget as we're about to get paid. Pay some bills.

And feel bummed that my new books, etc, have not arrived.. Or my kidsilk haze!!! Three and a half weeks now!!!! Janette thinks they may have been lost but we're giving it one more weekend before she resends..

Update: Looks like I did most of these things this long weekend, and the kidsilk haze has just arrived..

Billy Corgan tickets

June 08, 2005

Billy corgan tickets went on sale today but I am not going to go. I think that that part of my life is over. It really was such an obsession and just not healthy. I suppose that means I should take his picture down from my cubicle!

It's been a while.

April 20, 2005

So I'm not so good at this whole blogging thing! But today I am going to totally blog! I've just taken a bunch of photos and stuff and I am going to put them up.

Things to show off
- my new overlocker
- clapotis number two started
- new jean greenhowe knitted toy books
- new bendi shade card and leftover clapotis yarn
- finished french market bag, and pictures in progress
- Local lincraft closing down, stock totally gutted but was able to pick up a couple of bargains at 75% off today

and since I was taking photos, some cooking I'd just done! and some tops I'd just bought! All to be found in the extended entry so click-ez-vouz!

French Market Bag

french market bag from knitty. Modified the pattern significantly using 8mm instead of 4.5 or something like that specified in pattern. Shrunk the pattern down 4/5 in terms of stitches, but with much bigger needles it's come out much bigger of course. I used two strands of cosy wool held together, colours from stash (leftover from the cancelled kyoto!). It probably used eight ish balls all up.

All was going incredibly well and it had only taken less than a week when I got to the handles I wasn't paying attention, miscounted significantly (so I think I counted correctly then subtracted 20!) and everything went horribly wrong. So I ended up just casting off everything I could where I could (I won't explain the detail but it left me with millions of ends to weave in later).
I ended up just sewing a simple handle of my own design and making a knitting basket.

As my first felting experiment using yarn from stash, I'm happy enough. Considering Bendy rustic in one colour (probably red) and a considerably different shape for the next one, and I'll be doing it very soon me thinks. On the felting note, it was as simple as it sounds. Put in lingerie bag. Put in washing machine with a towel. Wash, and check every 10 minutes! I ended up having it in about 30 minutes. Next time, I'll err on the side of shrinking too much as it does stretch a bit when you are stuffing to the shape you want.

Stuffing it was probably the hardest bit - would be much easier if you had something the right shape to just let it dry on. I didn't, so I put clothing in lots of plastic bags and used them all to stuff it. It took two days ish to dry, longer than I expected..

anyway here's some photos.. starting, pre felting, and finished!

New overlocker!

I uhmed and ahhed after this for a long time and then finally bought it. $399 reduced from $599 in the janome sale. Haven't used it much yet though I have wanted to but been very busy. I am sure there will be lots to come v soon. Threading it was an extremely arduous task.

Clapotis # 2 started on Sunday

Not much to say yet. The yarn arrived from brooks farm last week (actually i think it was the week before). The colourway is beautiful, mostly browns and pinks (does not look at all like this picture) and it is very soft. I was not planning on getting started immediately, but with FMB off the needles so quickly and me yet to decide on yarn for the next, it's started! I am wearing clapotis # 1 practically every day at the moment and love it more every day.

This afternoon I cooked, and since I had the camera out.. I made Nikki's Zuchini slice (rechristened bacon quiche) .. I made 4/5 of the standard recipe as I only had 4 eggs, and it all fitted perfectly in my blue flan dish I bought during a xmas visit to Perth a few years ago, when I wanted to make a lime tart.

That was for our tea with a nice big greek salad, and I also made a big lasagne for tomorrow nights dinner. And, some anzac cookies. I looked on the web and found heaps of very similar recipes, will add a link to the one I used a bit later. I just made one batch as a test - will probably make a double or triple batch this weekend [anzac day!] to send in to my and michael's work. After we munched on a few and I gladwrapped some for Elizabeth our cleaner who is in today, M took the rest to work.

Jean Greenhowe Knitted Toy Books

I ordered these from the shearing shed in Canberra. I really wanted them! Will have more to say about them once I get onto a pattern or two.

Lincraft haul at 75% off

So they are closing down my local lincraft. They finally put some stuff on sale but that was after getting rid of all the yarn and fabric (must have found a buyer to take the whole lot) they had hardly anything left. But, today I did find the following for less than $15 all up! dpns in 5 and 6.5mm, a sewing book I had coveted but wasn't willing to pay $40 for, and some google eyes to use for my knitted toys in the future.

More Shopping

I also bought some generic wash and wear tops from suzanne gray and two new belts from army surplus. Yay!

New shade card from Bendi, leftover yarn from clapotis # 1

Was very exciting to receive this new shade card from bendigo wollen mills. I love bendi, that's where my alpaca was for clapotis # 1. This is how much yarn I had left over from two balls - quite a lot. I think I will make a matching hat. Just a plain one - not the clapotis hat over at that blog I can't think of right now..
